Hlobsile Simelane
Hlobsile2 Hlobsile Simelane

Hlobsile Simelane, 14 years old, was born on the 5th of November 1993. She is doing grade three at Cana Primary School in the Manzini region of Swaziland. She lives with her two siblings and her mother, who is currently in the hospital receiving treatment for TB. Hlobsile looks after her mother in the hospital during the school holidays. She has a brother who is around 16 years of age and a disabled sister who around 13 years of age. Their father disappeared over ten years ago; they have heard he is living in South Africa. Hlobsile and her siblings used to live with their grandmother who was supporting them; however, their grandmother passed away. Since then the school head teacher has been assisting them with food. The government Orphaned and Vulnerable Children fund is contributing only half of Hlobsile’s school fees. They have relied on donations from a nearby church to meet some basic needs. The church plays a major role in their lives. Due to financial constraints, Hlobsile started school very late, which is why she is doing grade three now instead of form two. Her current school uniform is torn and tattered, her shoes are worn out, and she has no stationery. The head teacher of Cana Primary School has tried to support them ; however, he is also constrained by limited resources. The fact that she still attends school is through the head teacher’s efforts, because her family has survived off of handouts from people in the community. They have moved from where they used to live because the owner of the property has chased them away. They are currently iving with their mother’s cousin who took them in due to their plight. Hlobsile prays for sustained support so she can finish her education and become a nurse so she can support her family and improve their livelihood.
